WOD “Building the Tribe”
P1: Run 800m
P3: Box Jumps
Penalty – anyone stops during the Thrusters or box jumps P1 runs another 800m.
Here is a pic of Bobbie at the top of her box jump. Great example to the gym, she comes in works hard, never complains and always smiling through the misery.
Notes: This workout was designed sort of last min really. Originally we had thought of a different workout but as Rob Shaul has said, as a trainer, we have to be flexible to what is happening in the moment. Program design can get tossed out the window real quick if necessary.
The workout was intended to do a couple things. Train the mind. I learned from Mark, and I agree wholeheartedly with him, that physical training is primarily training of the mind. What we are training is the willingness to endure through pain and suffering, the thrusters and box jumps did just that. The other part we were trying to get out of it was building some team love. The idea was to add stress in a different way in an effort to drive more hard work out of everyone for the sake of their fellow peer suffering what they had just finished and to keep people guessing. Not knowing what to expect is great training for the mind.
It was interesting to watch some people walk on the 800m run and leave their peers to grind out the reps while they “rest.” There a lots of reasons why they did it, I am sure, as I am sure that their teammates don’t care what the reasons were, all they know is they were left to deal with the consequences. I didn’t know how to react to this. I thought that it would push them, then I think, maybe it did…maybe they did push harder than they have ever pushed before. I will never know the answer to that. I hope that everyone learned something from tonight, took another step towards embracing the fact that this will hurt, that you are capable of more than you thought. You wanted to drop that bar…but you didn’t! You learned a valuable lesson that will transfer to every aspect of your life far more than a big deadlift or pull-ups ever will. You learned to control your thoughts…to calm down in the panic…hold on to that and remember it next time.
Reminder: Sat we are moving to our new location on Placentia and 19th street in Costa Mesa. Come to the the gym for one last saturday workout at 10, pack it up and BBQ with us at the new spot! I am looking forward to seeing everyone there to celebrate this with us. Location details to follow. Hope to see you all soon.
