Day 2 of the Reebok CrossFit SoCal Regional has come to a close and to say it was a success for CrossFit Costa Mesa would be an understatement. Carrie and our affiliate team put in some serious work this weekend and officially put our gym on the competition map.
First, Carrie. She started the day with a deadlift/box jump workout. It followed the traditional 21-15-9 rep scheme with 205 lb. deadlifts and 24 inch box jumps. The load was heavy and the box jumps were high but she cruised to 13th overall, which would turn out to be her best finish for the weekend. Like a coal powered locomotive she just kept grinding through each lift, and powering through each jump while her competition stood staring at the bar.
Next came a workout that has come to be known as one of the toughest CF competition workouts ever, The Hundreds. One hundred pull-ups, kettlebell swings, double unders and 65 lb. overhead squats are the task and competitors have 30 minutes to get the work done. While Carrie didn’t make it all the way through the workout she managed to get very close, finishing 16th overall once the clock put a stop to her effort.
Then there’s the CFCM affiliate team. First Lindsay and Aaron would tackle the same deadlift/box jump scheme as Carrie, but they would have to tag team through it. Aaron would lead off, working through all 45 reps, then he tagged Lindsay who swapped out the weight and changed the box. They crushed this workout in 10:30, good enough for 9th overall.
Then they’d take on the team version of The Hundreds, which included 250 reps of each, with the bonus of chest-to-bar pull-ups. Bobbie, Gillian, Justin and Alec took on this task head first, grinding through each movement until the necessary reps were met. By the time they got to the overhead squats it was a race against the clock; a 30 minute time cap loomed over their effort as they scrambled to finish in time. As the CFCM supporters in the stands screamed their lungs out the team closed in on the required reps and finished the workout off in 29:53, just 7 seconds short of the cut-off time. First in their heat (only 2 teams finished) and 10th overall for the workout the team went nuts and the crowd followed.
While both the team and Carrie have been cut from the competition (top 10 teams and 14 individuals advance to Sunday) their performances this weekend were nothing short of amazing. Just one short year ago our team fininshed 57th at Regionals (back when there was no qualifying to get in), now we’re top 20. Just one short year ago Carrie was just getting started competing in the Intermediate class, now she’s 21st in the Region amongst some of the top women in the world. It’s been an amazing year for CrossFit Costa Mesa, to say the least.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support today and a big thank you to our athletes who gave it everything they had this weekend.
