Notes: We have been increasing our awareness this last week or 2 in two things (and that is usually the limit of trying to change things, 2 at a time), the first being our food and drink intake. The second, the structure of our thoughts.
I really think that as we become more aware of what is really happening on both fronts there will be a natural movement to correct some imbalances. You can’t get away from the laws of homeostasis. After this is done, we can start to apply more attention to the details and troubleshoot some of the problems.
I hesitate to go into greater detail than this right now because there is just no need for it yet. There is a tendency for everyone (myself included) to think that they are more advanced then they actually are. We need to get back to some basics here and just see what it is we are really doing. It’s easy to distort, delete, and generalize events in our lives and either create bad belief systems from them or in the case of food, convince ourselves it doesn’t happen that often, or that it’s ok to let lose every now and again…every meal, every day.
Once we get the habit of being aware of what goes in our mouth and in our minds we can start looking at the results we have in our lives and put the two together. There is a cost to everything, I have to be willing to pay the cost and have the results that that behavior yields, or change the behavior and get a new result. Both involve pain, one is the pain of change, one is the pain of dealing with being unsatisfied with your body fat. (I use fat, because almost everyone wants to be less fat then they are right now, so it’s easy to identify with.) Both involve pleasure too. One is the pleasure of meeting your body fat goals, showing the 6 pack abs (nothing wrong with that goal in my opinion). The other is the instant gratification of drinking the latte, eating the chips and salsa. The question you have to start thinking about is which pain is greater, which pleasure is greater? Obviously you (all of us) have associated much more pain to change and much more pleasure to instant gratification than the opposite, so we keep doing it. What we need to do is start heaping on the pain and really associate the cost of that instant gratification to the point that eating healthy is the easy choice, and at the same time, heap as much pleasure as we can to meeting the body fat goals. As we go through this I will coach you guys on how to do this, you have been doing it all along, we will just start to figure out exactly how YOU do it as individuals.
Pay attention. Pay attention to how many lattes you have each day. How many times do you tell yourself you can’t do something? Pay attention to what happens in your mind as you convince yourself to eat that junk you know is going to make you fat. And you thought you lack motivation! Ha, you just motivated yourself to take action, now, how did you do it? Just pay attention for the next 40 days. Let the natural power of exposing these things to your attention take place and change those behaviors for the better.
Have a safe weekend, see you all soon.
