Hi Friends. Well, today was better than yesterday and I will give it that. I was still not entirely feeling like my usual self, but I had some moments. Steve and I talked about how my workouts would go this week in preparation for my comp on Saturday and kind of collaborated what he thought would be best for me training wise and what I thought would be best based on how I am feeling mentally and emotionally (and we all know feelings are important!). I ended up doing an IWT today, which went well, and I am feeling generally better.
I read this quote yesterday from Prefontaine: “The best pace is a suicide pace, and today is a good day to die.” I wrote this in my workout journal before my starting my IWT this morning, and the words ran though my head several times as I rowed and climbed. It’s maybe a little intense and I’m not sure why I like it so much, but for some reason, it motivated and pushed me today.
I don’t know what goes thorough your heads when you workout… if it is positive or negative, if you have words or phrases that you say to yourself, or maybe you just zone out and go through the motions. I have noticed that how I think and what I tell myself during a workout is much different now than it was 2 or 3 years ago when I was still very new to CrossFit. I gave up a lot more in those days… didn’t necessarily quit, but stopped pushing my hardest because I didn’t know how to deal with the mental and physical discomfort.
I can’t tell you what you should do or think when your lungs are burning and you body is hurting, and the negative voices creep in and say to you that “you can’t”, but maybe just try to be aware next time. If what you are telling yourself when you are in the hole isn’t helpful, maybe it would be worth trying something different? For me, I have to be positive… remind myself that I am strong, I am capable, I do deserve this, I do want this, I get to do this! It is pretty amazing how I can turn myself around. You know what I’m sayin’?
